Originally Purchased in January 2021
Kauri Lodge began its new chapter in January 2021 with the purchase of what was, at the time, a neglected, fire damaged and derelict 1970s multi-level pole house — a property that despite its condition still carried a striking architectural presence. Its dramatic angles, split-level design and elevated positioning immediately revealed the forward-thinking vision that had originally shaped the home decades earlier. Rather than erase that identity, the intention from the outset was to preserve and honour the architectural spirit that first made the property extraordinary.

The Back Story contd..
Working alongside Rimu Architects of Wellington, an extensive rebuild programme was undertaken using consented architectural plans that carefully reimagined the existing structure into a contemporary coastal retreat while retaining the character and soul of the original design.
What followed was a substantial transformation involving extensive earthworks, major site reconfiguration, engineered retaining systems, drainage infrastructure, excavations and the reshaping of the entire property to create multiple functional and intimate living environments.

More than 250 tonnes of material were removed from the site to facilitate the redevelopment, including excavation beneath the home to create additional accommodation and substantial integrated storage. The landscape itself became part of the architectural vision, with extensive gabion retaining systems and natural ballast rock installed to secure the site while enhancing its organic coastal aesthetic.

As part of the wider vision for the property, the site was further reconfigured to accommodate the addition of Kauri Cabin — a fully self-contained standalone accommodation retreat that now provides an independent living environment and established boutique accommodation income stream.

The result is not simply a renovated home, but an immersive lifestyle property that balances architectural complexity with warmth, privacy and functionality. Kauri Lodge was rebuilt not merely to modernise, but to create a home with emotional depth — a property that reveals different experiences, outlooks and atmospheres at every level while remaining deeply connected to its coastal and native surroundings.
